Two thousand years ago, where the Rhône embraces the hills of Pilat, the Allobroges built a city they named Vienna — “the town on the water”. When Rome conquered Gaul, it did not destroy Vienne. It married it. The legions settled their veterans there, senators built their villas, and the small Gallic town soon became Vienna Felix — Vienne the Happy, rival of Lyon, protected by emperors.
Carved into the hillside in the 1st century, the ancient theatre of Vienne could hold nearly 13,000 spectators. Its tiers hug the slope of Pipet like a wave frozen in golden stone. Every summer evening, when the sun sets over the Rhône, the walls come back to life: a saxophone replaces the lyre, a trumpet answers Pan's flute.

When the Roman Empire fell, Vienne did not fade away. It became an episcopal see, the capital of a kingdom, and even — for a moment — an imperial city. It was in its Saint-Maurice Cathedral that the kings of Burgundy came to be crowned. In 1311, Pope Clement V convened there the Council of Vienne, which decided the dissolution of the Order of the Templars.
